DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS TOP NTCA PRESEASON POLL

HACKENSACK, NJ – The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the defending NCAA national champions of women’s bowling, was voted as the No. 1 team in the 2009-10 National Tenpin Coaches Association preseason poll. The NTCA conducts monthly polls during the NCAA women’s bowling regular season.

The 2009 NCAA title was the Huskers’ third in the six-year history of NCAA women’s bowling championships. No other program has more than one. Nebraska, which received 18 out of a possible 19 first place votes in the poll, will initiate its defense of the title in Springfield, MO at the Greater Ozark Invitational on October 24th.

Ranked second was Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN. The Commodores have advanced to the national championship tournament the past four seasons – winning the title in 2007. Vanderbilt will open the season in Springfield, MO, as well.

The third ranked squad was Fairleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, NJ. Last Spring, the Knights were semifinalists at NCAA championship for the fifth time in six seasons. The 2006 national champs will kick off the season by hosting the Fright Knight Invite in Elmwood Park, NJ on October 30th.

Tied for the No. 4 spot were the University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore of Princess Anne, MD. The UCM Jennies, who were runner-ups at the NCAA Championship last season – their third second place finish in six years, launch their 2009-10 campaign as the host of the Greater Ozark Invitational. The UMES Hawks, who won the 2008 NCAA national championship and have qualified for NCAA nationals six consecutive years, begin their season at the Fright Knight Invite.

Delaware State University of Dover, DE was ranked sixth. Last season, the Hornets were selected to the NCAA championship tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. DSU will start its schedule in Elmwood Park, NJ.

In seventh place was Arkansas State University of Jonesboro, AR. The Red Wolves, who were national championship tournament qualifiers for the second straight season a year ago, will open up in Springfield, MO.

Ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, were New Jersey City University of Jersey City, NJ and the Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, CT. The NJCU Gothic Knights are six-time NCAA championship tournament participants. The SHU Pioneers have made it there four times. Both programs will get its season started in Elmwood Park, NJ.

Rounding out the Top Ten was Kutztown University of Kutztown, PA. Only in their third year of existence, the Golden Bears’ season opens at the Fright Knight Invite.

Point system:

NTCA voters rank the top 20 teams on their ballot. Each position has an assigned point value, ranging from 32 points for first place and one point for twentieth place. After the total points for every team is calculated, the totals are sorted in descending order. The specific point values follow:

1st place = 32 points, 2nd = 29, 3rd = 27, 4th = 25, 5th = 23, 6th = 21, 7th = 19, 8th = 17, 9th = 15, 10th = 13, 11th = 11, 12th = 9, 13th = 8, 14th = 7, 15th = 6, 16th = 5, 17th = 4, 18th = 3, 19th = 2, 20th = 1.
